Now the names of famous folks like writers, inventors, scientists, civil rights leaders, names from the Bible, big time criminals, presidents and so on are remembered. Then remembering the names of community pastors, teachers, neighbors and leaders. Yet loved ones’ stories passed down from generation to generation filled with family history, pain and strength.
What’s in a name? Psalm 91:14 “Because he (You & me) have set his (our) love upon Me [the LORD), therefore will I deliver him and her: I will set them on high, because they have known My Name, a promise with confidence, an assurance. Colossians 2:2 "That their (our) hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love, and unto all riches of the full assurance of understanding, to the acknowledgement of the mystery of God, and of the Father, and of Christ." Psalm 91 is often called “the Psalm of Life.” The condition of God’s protection is we must Trust Him. Highlighting specific verses 1-8, 15 and 16 In Knowing My [God’s] Name.
1st verse, He (us) that dwells (lives) in the secret place (i.e. shelter, covering & protection; Hebrew translations are hide & conceal) of the most High shall abide (stay) under the shadow (covering) of the Almighty.
2nd I will say (declare) of the LORD, He is my refuge (shelter) and my fortress (place of defense): my God; in Him will I trust.
3rd Surely, He shall deliver me from the snare (trap or pitfall) of the fowler (enemy), and from the noisome pestilence (destruction).
4th He shall cover you & me with His feathers, and under His wings shall you & I trust: His truth shall be our shield (protection); also think about His weapon of warfare, Eph. 6:10-18 includes the “Shield of Faith.” Now “and buckler” to complete verse 4th Buckler represents a smaller shield used in close spiritual warfare.
5th “You & I shall not be afraid for the terror by night (unseen); nor for the arrow (stuff, problems & situations causing despair) that flies (occurs) by day (visible); 6th "Nor for the pestilence (deadly disaster or disease) that walks in darkness (evil also like a snake that crawls, sneaks to attack & conquer; nor for the destruction that wastes (destroys) at noonday," (24/7).
7th “A thousand shall fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand (signifies God’s power and strength); but it shall not come near you (Our LORD, if we can just grasp, Your Almighty love, power & protection for and covering you & me)!
8th “Only with your eyes & my eyes shall we behold and see the reward of the wicked.” Clarity: God’s judgment upon persistent evil is neither forgotten nor uncertain. The destruction of Sodom, Pharaoh’s defeat at the Red Sea, and the downfall of proud nations testify that the LORD repays rebellion in His appointed time. The final fulfillment awaits Christ’s return, when He will judge the living and the dead with perfect righteousness (Revelation 20:11–15). Believers are spared condemnation not because we are without sin, but because Christ bore judgment for all who trust in Him (Bible Hub). 15th “He (you & I) shall call on me [the LORD], and I will answer him-her: I will be with us in trouble; I will deliver them, and honor him & her. First John 5:14-15 “And this is the confidence (assurance) that we have in Him, that, if we ask any thing according to His will, He hears us: And if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desires of Him. What petitions you desire from the LORD? Do you believe with confidence that He hears and answers? Does He continue to show Himself faithful over and over again?
16th “With long life (or length of days are extended or multiplied) will I satisfy him & her.” Then in the Old Testament “With long life” is a blessing and a special reward for obedience (Bible Hub); “And show them my salvation.” Salvation in the Old Testament normally include physical rescue, safety, and deliverance from real life threats, sickness and oppression.
Today we are the benefactors and witnesses of a better covenant-promise, to include salvation, the comforter-Holy Spirit which makes known God’s Word in our mind, heart and spirit. Then Psalm 91, a very present help in times of trouble, distress, evilness and wickedness lurking all around us. But LORD, You said, we shall not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flies by day; 6th "Nor for the pestilence that walks in darkness; nor for the destruction that wastes at noonday. Because we have individually set our love, heart and mind on Jesus thus, we Know Your Name! LORD thanks for all your promises of hearing and answering our prayers, Your secret place, protection, rescue, blessings and so much more…In Jesus’ Name, Amen!!!
