You, I and most have found ourselves in overwhelming situations above our ability to fix. Many of those situations were unexpected while others developed over a period of time. Yet we are reminded in Ecclesiastes 1:9 “There is nothing new under the sun.” Folks may ask, “Why do you reference the Bible?” Because it is the Book of Life. Anything we want to know about life and how to live is in the Bible. Then it’s said, “The Bible is hard to understand.” Well pray and ask God for understanding while reading. The overwhelming situation that created king Jehoshaphat to have a fearful heart until they received the messager’s response of, “Thus says the LORD to you” is found in 2 Chronicles 20:1-15. This summary includes: The king was told a multitude of armies were on the way to battle against them (Judah and Jersualuem). Jehoshaphat feared” like most of us would. But he was not stuck. The king “Set (humbled) himself to seek the LORD. Humility included weeping, crying out to God, asking for forgiveness of their sins and falling on their faces before the LORD. We need You LORD. The king also proclaimed a fast throughout the nation. They all fasted and sought the LORD together for His help. Can we imagine the out-cry, the pouring out of their heartfelt cries to the LORD, including to abstain from food and drinks, except probably water.
In addition Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation before the new court of the LORD and exalted God’s power and might; including all He had done for them. Read verses 9-13 for the rest of prayer. Can you imagine the power of God with the Nation Judah and Jerusalem on one accord.
Now God said through the messenger to the people in verse 15 “Hearken (hear/listen) ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. My, my, my…what a Word from the LORD! Therefore king Jehoshaphat fear and the people’s fear was extinguished. The LORD addressed their fear “Be not afraid nor dismayed.” Then He solved their problem giving the entire Nation the assurance “The battle was not theirs but, belonged to Who? God Himself!
Yet noting Jehoshaphat was not perfect in all his ways. In 2 Chronicles 18 Chapter, Jehoshaphat displeased God when he supported the wicked king Ahab in battle. Nonetheless, God was pleased with Jehoshaphat since he set standards for Judah and they turned back to the LORD. None are perfect in all of our ways. Thus we pray God is pleased with our love for Him as well as our godliness outweighs our ungodly ways.
More insight on 2 Chronicles 20:15 “The battle was not theirs but belonged to God” is a biblical principle in times of weakness and fear. We are commanded to put our trust in God’s power instead of our limited strength. Your heart and mine should be deeply rooted in Christ with faith and the assurance that He never fails.
Furthermore God is actively involved in our struggles and challenges. He reassures believers that when we confront seemingly unbearable situations, we are not alone. We ought to rest in the assurance that God will fight for you and me. We are reminded throughout scripture “Not to be afraid.” 2 Timothy 1:7 “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” Yet when we find ourselves in overwhelming situations you and I are encourage to place our fears and anxieties before the LORD, surrender our battles to Him and trust His divine plan for our lives (taken from Bibleverseexplained.com).
So God is faithful, unchanging and His promises are “Yea, and Amen!” His Word helps us in times of weakness. Let the body of Christ, individuals, family and/or various organizations mirror the prayer that Jehoshaphat led the people of Judah and Jerusalem into or a related prayer in time of fear. However these prayers will specifically address the overwhelming situation (s) that leads to fear.
Thus we all should seek God with humility, asking for forgiveness, declaring the LORD’s power and authority, acknowledge the things He has already done and to turn away from filling our bellies with food and drinks, except water.
